  1. What’s the difference between the Adult Education, Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED) Preparation, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs?

    Adult Education is the practice of teaching and educating adults. This often happens in the workplace, through 'extension' or ' continuing education' courses at secondary schools, at a college or university.

    Adult Basic Education (ABE) – Courses of instruction designed to improve the employability of the state’s workforce through instruction in reading, mathematics, language, and workplace readiness skills at grade-level equivalency of 0.0 – 8.9.

    GED Preparation – Courses of instruction designed to improve the employability of the state’s workforce through instruction in reading, mathematics, language, and workplace readiness skills. It is highly recommended that a student be functioning at or above a 9.0 grade level.

    ESOL Program – A program of non-credit English language courses designed to improve the employability of the state’s workforce through acquisition of communication skills and cultural competencies which enhance the ability to read, write, speak and listen in English.

  2. When do courses start?

    Courses start at the beginning of each semester. If seats in a classroom are available at midterm, some students may be entered in the Adult Education program. Entry will be based on the availability of classroom seats in specific subject levels and according to the student’s educational functioning level.

  3. What is the difference between ESOL and ESL?

    ESOL means English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESL means English as a Second Language. The two terms are interchangeable.

  4. Do I need a Social Security number to participate?

    ESOL students who do not have a social security number can still register and take all of our free ESOL and Adult Basic Education courses!

  5. How long will it take me to complete the program and prepare for the GED test?

    This varies according to the student’s educational progress, class attendance and completion of assignments.

  6. How much does it cost?

    The 2011 Florida Legislature adopted Adult Education tuition. Student tuition for Florida residents will be $30 per semester and an additional $90 per semester for out-of-state students. Please complete the residency affidavit form to be considered a Florida resident.

  7. How old does one need to be to take an Adult Education, GED or ESL class?

    At least 16 years of age. 

    If a student is under the age of eighteen (18), a parent or guardian must complete a Parental Consent Form (pdf 123.33 kB), which gives the student’s admission to the Adult Education program.   Please fax or mail the form to the Program Coordinator: Tallahassee Community College, 444 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304-2859 or 850.201-8617.

  9. When can I start my course or training program?

    After a TCC application to the Adult Education program is complete, TABE testing is complete, and at the beginning of each semester.

  10. What else do I need?

  11. How long are the courses?

    Each course lasts a semester.

  12. Do I need to buy books?

    No. All books are provided free of charge for our Adult Education, GED or ESL classes.

  13. Where are classes located?

    Tallahassee Community College provides GED, Adult Education and English as a Second Language classes throughout the Big Bend Region.

  14. Do I have to enroll in the College in order to attend an Adult Education, GED or ESL class?

    Yes, you will need to enroll in the College.

  15. Who can take the GED test?

    The GED Tests may be given to: Residents of Florida, proof of residency must include either a State of Florida Driver License or State of Florida Identification Card; Adults, 18 years of age or older; Youths, 16 or 17 years of age who have been granted an age waiver from their local school system; Individuals not enrolled in an accredited high school; Individuals who have not graduated from an accredited high school or have not already receive a high school equivalency diploma; GED examinees must be at least 18 years of age or older unless they have been granted a; GED Age Waiver by their local school board. Each school board has established policies for their area.

  16. What are the score requirements?

    GED examinees must score a minimum of 2, 250 points on the GED Tests and must score a minimum of 450 points on each of the five subtests. It is recommended that examinees that score less than 410 on their first attempt of the Official GED Tests enroll in a GED Preparatory Program. Preparatory programs are provided at no cost to students through school districts and community colleges. GED examinees passing the Official GED Tests are issued a State of Florida High School Diploma. In addition, each examinee receives a transcript of his/her scores.

  17. How old must I be to take the test?

    GED examinees must be at least 18 years of age or older unless they have been granted a GED age waiver by the local educational agency (16 & 17 year olds only). GED age waiver requirements vary by location. Contact the Leon County School's Adult & Community Education Center at 850.922.5343 to find out about age waiver requirements.

  18. How do I register for the test and how much does it cost?

    TCC does not administer the actual GED test.

    Complete GED test are $70

    Please confirm individual tests cost with the testing site, yet cost are usually:

    Language Arts/Writing: $16

    Social Studies, Science, Math, Language/Arts/Reading: $14

  19. Can the GED test scores be used for college admission or admission to the military?

    Nearly all United States colleges and universities accept the GED diploma as a high school equivalency credential. GED Tests cannot be used as a substitute for placement or admissions tests. Each branch of the military has specific recruiting guidelines regarding the acceptance of the GED credential. It is important that GED examinees who wish to enter the military should contact a local recruiting office to determine specific qualifications they must meet. The Commission of Educational Credit and Credentials recommends that postsecondary institution officials, employers, training program officials, licensing boards and all branches of the armed services accept the GED credential in the same manner as they accept regular high school diplomas. GED percentile rankings represent the GED graduate's performance related to the performance on the GED Tests of a representative group of graduating high school seniors.

  20. What kind of diploma will I receive?

    GED examinees passing the Official GED Tests will receive a State of Florida High School Diploma. In addition, each examinee receives a transcript of his/her scores.

  21. Can I get extra transcripts?

    Additional transcripts or copies of diplomas may be obtained by submitting a request to:

  22. Are special accommodations available for students with disabilities?

    Adults may apply for special accommodations for the GED Tests if they have special needs. The disabling condition must be documented and all required forms completed. Candidates with learning or physical disabilities may request modifications of testing conditions. All special accommodation requests must be submitted to the GED Chief Administrator. Special accommodations may include any or all of the following: Extended time; Assistance from a scribe; Use of a calculator; Testing in a private room; Frequent breaks. Special editions of the tests are also available in audiocassette, Braille and large print formats.

  23. How do you become an instructor for the Adult Education, GED and ESL programs?

    Instructors are required to have a bachelor degree and complete a TCC staff employment application.
